Roti Ganjel Rel is a legendary bread that originated in Semarang and has been around since the Dutch colonial era.

It is said to be inspired by a popular Dutch bread called Ontbijtkoek, which was known for its delicious taste. However, making a similar cake for Javanese people at that time was not easy, especially due to the expensive ingredients.

As a result, a creative idea emerged to make a Javanese version of Ontbijtkoek using cassava or gaplek as the main ingredient. Initially, Roti Ganjel Rel did not taste as good since it did not use wheat flour. But, the recipe was later modified to ensure that the bread could be enjoyed to its fullest.
